Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) explained

What is a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)?

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a legally required document for certain construction work activities that are classified as ‘high risk’.

A SWMS outlines work activities in a logical sequence, the hazards involved, and the measures put in place to control the risks.

Why do I need a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)?

The purpose of a SWMS is to help supervisors and workers understand how to carry out high risk construction work in a safe manner.

It is a requirement for all of the 18 high risk construction work activities as defined in the WHS Regulations so it’s critical that you get this right.

What information must be included in a SWMS?

A SWMS must:

·         Identify what high risk construction work is involved

·         List hazards relating to the activity and the risks to health and safety

·         Describe the measures to be implemented to control the risks, and;

·        Describe how the control measures are to be implemented, monitored and reviewed.

A SWMS should be brief, easy to understand and focus on the specific hazards identified and the control measures to be put in place.

A common mistake is to use lengthy, overly detailed SWMS documents purchased from online sources. These documents can be difficult to understand and apply at the workplace.
